FUNKY
Until now I’ve steered clear of passing judgement on Funky. Perhaps it’s finally time for my two pennies worth. This is, in part, inspired by and a reaction to L-Vis’ recent post on Curbcrawlers. Read it here. I fully agree with his take on the current state of affairs and I think the most important thing to take from this is his decision to label his productions ‘UK House’. Now, to say that I’m apathetic when it comes genre classification and pigeonholing would be an understatement but in distancing himself from the comedy dances that have indeed become the first point of reference for the majority perhaps he and others can take their sound to a wider audience. I fear that some great records are in danger of falling victim to a name and, as always, the hype.
I’ll be the first to admit that that my exposure to Funky has been fairly limited but I owe my love of dance music to early Masters At Work et al, artists that have undoubtably influenced some of today’s best producers. What is clear to me though, is that so many Funky records just aren’t funky. Surely L-Vis has it right. This is House music.
Call it what you what you will, if you listen with open ears you will discover that there is so much more to this than meets the eye.
